Classes started back up this week; it's gonna be a heck of a busy semester, I suspect. Even so, I've been able to work in some Skyrim time. It's become my go-to game. I did re-up my WoW account earlier this week, but despite still kinda liking the game, there's no real spark there, and my best guess is that after this month runs out, I'll be done at least until the next expansion. (I made an orc monk, an old grizzled fellow named Gongall on the Garona server (marked 'New Players' so lots of folks levelling and stuff) and I do enjoy him. Maybe he'll be my next Elder Scrolls character!)

I also tried out some Guild Wars 2 this morning, since I got an invite from them to play free this weekend. It's very pretty and runs nicely on the Octopus (my laptop). I'm not sure how much I like the focused storytelling, though; GW2 forces my character to have a specific personality and voice, and I don't like that. I also wonder how repetitive it'd be to create an alt of the same race (I'm such a fiend for alts); WoW's straight-line, themepark questing style that started in Cataclysm is pretty mind-numbing on the second or third (fourth, fifth, umpteenth) playthrough.

But nevermind that. How's that thar Skyrim, Haz? )

As mentioned, I started a new character for Skyrim. Tulla Greysmoke, inspired by my Tauren druid (one of my oldest characters) in WoW, is a Breton by heritage, though a Forsworn grandparent has given her a wild streak and a deep dislike of Nords, especially Nords who rant about how Skyrim is THEIR land. Bah!

Greysmoke is pretty druidy herself -- light armor (leathers, hides, and fur) primarily, magic and stealth, and her beast blood (yep, another werewolf, though far more in tune with her inner beast than Chela... and far less /reckless/ about using it) for when brute force is needed. With Howl of the Pack, she can (and often does) call up a couple of spirit wolves to soften up and distract enemies.

With Greysmoke I used the Random Alternate Start mod; this gives you a quick chargen and then dumps your new character in one of hundreds of different locations in the Skyrim wilderness. It also lets you pick a class-flavored equipment kit (or none at all, or random). Pretty cool; awesome variety for starting alts.

Tulla Greysmoke in chargen. Not a woman to mess with, yo.

Waking up in the lair of a coven of necromancers.

Time to wolf out! Note: necromancers taste terrible. But killing them is satisfying.

Couple of days later, Greysmoke explores the area near Falkreath.

Exploring another dungeon.

Taking care of a bounty. Bandits always have good grub laying about.

Greysmoke found a really lovely little cabin, but it was locked. Fine. She set up camp in the front yard anyway, used their firewood, ate their potatoes and leeks. And they were delicious.

After being attacked by people, chased a lot, and almost being murderfaced too many times, PLUS DRAGONS, Chela's decided to say 'screw it' to this whole Dragonborn thing and go live like a hermit in the middle of nowhere. I mean, why risk her neck when it seems like most of Skyrim's population wants her dead?

Bah.

(Translation: Hazmat's gonna be starting a new Skyrim game soon. Or take a break from Skyrim for some Fallout New Vegas... but New Vegas needs some work, first. So probably Skyrim. Heheh.)

Sneaking through the wilderness, hiding from hostile people, hostile wildlife, and hostile dragons.

Sharing meat with wild wolves, huddling by a fire at night. (Then a sabrecat savaged her and the wolves just before dawn. Sigh.)

Dragon in the distance. Dragon SCARY.

Finally made it to Ivarstead! Warming up in the inn while wearing the clothes of a dead man. Again.

Making her way stealthily up the 7000 (fortunately less than that) steps to High Hrothgar.

Oh hello, werewolf. I am also a werewolf.

The last pic, by the way, came about because Chela'd decided to take a few days to center herself. Find a cave for shelter, live off the land for a while. The first cave she found was wayyy too big and had already been claimed by a fellow werewolf. He didn't seem interested in fully clearing the cave, so Chela took care of that and brought him a ton of meat from a captive bear and sabrecat that'd she'd found (and killed).

She's gonna find another cave to live in, though. Let the other guy have THAT cave.

Bad luck and bad decisions...

Chela and a Series of Unfortunate Events. )

Screenshots later, when I have some more time.

So, I ended up reinstalling Realistic Needs and Diseases, then Frostfall, then Hunterborn. Turned off all the lethal settings in RND and Frostfall. Chela has enough bad luck all on her own; she doesn't need to go and die due to thirst or weather.

You wanna know how unlucky she is? )

My husband likes to rib me a little about how I play Bethesda's open-world games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas) in that I often spend as much time modding (looking at mods/installing mods/testing mods/uninstalling mods/sometimes making mods) as I do actually in the game itself. This combined with my tendency toward alt-itis means that despite many many MANY hours, I've completed the Main Quest in only one of these games (Morrowind, which is also the game I've far and away put the most hours into).

In which Hazmat goes on at GREAT length about mods and about her current character. )

After installing some of Ferretgroo's recommended mods and testing them out, I went and started a brand new game with my displaced Ashlander Dunmer woman. I have a mod called Alternate Start - Live Another Life which basically makes the whole chargen process quicker AND lets you start somewhere than the usual Helgen prisoner thing. (There was an update on Skyrim Nexus that polished this mod up, making the Main Quest even less urgent along with an extra mod that took away the automatic starter spells Healing and Flames... but I can't find it. Maybe the author took it down? Shame. But anyway.)

Since my character was a Dark Elf/Dunmer, the alternate start mod gave me the opportunity to start in Raven Rock as a Dunmer refugee. This fit into my character's vague backstory perfectly, so I clicked that and bam. Raven Rock, with nothing but some miner's clothes, an iron mace, one spell (Sparks) 'cause Dunmer have a bonus in Destruction magic I guess, some food, and a little bit of money.

Some Dragonborn spoilers under here! Also, long. )

Semi-ironman Skyrim, maybe? Ironman with Narrator veto if I feel the character's end doesn't feel "right". Hmmm.

Here's my collection of Skyrim screenshots on Steam Community.

Skyrim is compelling. I often find myself going "well, just one more thing" before I finally quit. The only real downside (apart from it keeping me from doing other stuff, haha) is that, like most Bethesda games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas), it doesn't play nicely with alt-tabbing. Windowed mode on the Octopus is also very not ideal. So it's difficult to impossible for me to play Skyrim while keeping an eye on SimpleMU activity. So, no wandering around Tamriel while roleplaying or even MU* chatting.

More Skyrim nattering behind the cut, possible spoilers. )

Anyway, enough nattering for now. Needless to say, enjoying myself a lot. :)

Skyrim!

This has been the summer of being pretty much broke -- broke to the point where I've given up buying comics and been playing free-version WoW (starter account) and mostly-free EQ2 (I did shell out five bucks for Silver because it seemed fair for the amount I was playing it). But then I got pretty tired of both. Bit of ennui.

And Steam's summer sale was just depressing, because it started right when things were being /really/ tight this summer, so I wasn't looking at Steam much. Then, yesterday, I opened up Steam to maybe play some PvZ (I still have 2 achievements to get) and discovered that a friend of mine had gifted me with Skyrim. Legendary edition.

Wow.
